Since HHC was banned in Ireland in July 2025, the conversation around alternative cannabinoids has exploded. THCP, HHCP, THCJD, THCPO, HHCPO — if you've been trying to keep up, you're not alone. Here's a plain-English guide to what they all are and what the legal picture looks like in Ireland.
The cannabis plant contains over 100 naturally occurring cannabinoids. CBD and THC are the most well known, but chemists have been identifying — and in some cases synthesising — many others. The ones people are searching for in Ireland right now fall into two broad camps:
HHC was in the second category — which is exactly why it got banned.
THCP is a naturally occurring cannabinoid discovered in 2019, reported to bind to CB1 receptors with significantly higher affinity than standard THC. It exists in trace amounts in cannabis. As of writing, its legal status in Ireland is unclassified — but because it's closely related to THC, regulatory scrutiny is expected.
HHCP is the hydrogenated form of THCP — similar to how HHC was the hydrogenated form of THC. Some brands pivoted to HHCP immediately after the HHC ban. Its legal status in Ireland is currently unscheduled, but it sits in a grey area and may face future restrictions.
THCJD is a naturally occurring minor cannabinoid with an extended side chain that reportedly makes it more potent than conventional THC. Very limited research exists. Not currently scheduled in Ireland, but watch this space.
THCPO (or THC-O) is a synthetic cannabinoid — it does not occur naturally in hemp and is produced through a chemical acetylation process. Many EU jurisdictions have already moved to restrict it. Not currently scheduled in Ireland but considered high-risk from a regulatory standpoint.
THCA is the natural precursor to THC found in raw, unheated cannabis. Non-psychoactive in raw form, it converts to THC when heated. It's being sold in Ireland as a hemp product, though the legal picture is genuinely complicated — THCA from high-potency plants may not fall within EU hemp limits.
Ireland banned HHC (and 13 other substances) in July 2025. The remaining novel cannabinoids listed above are currently not explicitly scheduled — but that can change quickly. The government has signalled continued vigilance about new drug trends.
The safest position: only buy from brands with publicly available, current COAs that clearly show compliant cannabinoid profiles. Avoid products making vague claims about potency or that won't publish their lab results.
Zaza Platinum doesn't chase regulatory grey areas. We make premium hemp botanical diffusers using authentic terpene profiles — natural, clean, compliant. Every batch is third-party lab tested. We publish our COAs. No synthetic surprises, no regulatory risk.
It's not the flashiest positioning — but it's the one that lets us still be here in 5 years.
