Ask most people what makes one hemp vape better than another, and they'll say the cannabinoids. But the truth is — for flavour, character, and the specific feel of a vape — terpenes are everything.
What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are organic aromatic compounds found in virtually all plants — they're what gives a lemon its citrus scent, lavender its calming smell, and cannabis its distinctive profile. Over 150 terpenes have been identified in the cannabis/hemp plant alone.
They're not just about smell. Research suggests terpenes interact with cannabinoids to shape the overall experience — this is known as the entourage effect. Different terpene profiles produce noticeably different experiences even with the same cannabinoid base.
The Most Important Terpenes in Hemp Vapes
Myrcene
The most abundant terpene in most hemp strains. Earthy, herbal, slightly fruity. Associated with relaxing, grounding effects. Dominant in indica profiles like Original Z and Blueberry Cookies.
Limonene
Bright, citrusy, energising. Found in lemon, orange peel, and cannabis. Associated with mood elevation and stress relief. The signature terpene in Lemon Cherry Gelato.
Caryophyllene
Spicy, woody, pepper-like. Unique in that it directly activates CB2 receptors. Associated with anti-inflammatory properties. Present in most Zaza Platinum profiles.
Linalool
Floral, lavender-like, slightly sweet. Associated with calming, sedative effects. Contributes the cherry softness to Lemon Cherry Gelato.
Pinene
Fresh, piney, crisp. Associated with alertness and memory retention. Adds complexity to sativa-leaning profiles like Pineapple Express.
Terpinolene
Floral, herbal, slightly citrus. Often found in sativa strains. Contributes to the uplifting quality of Mango Z and Pineapple Express.
Botanical vs Cannabis-Derived Terpenes
Not all terpenes in hemp products come from hemp. There are two main types:
- Botanically derived terpenes (BDT) — extracted from plants other than cannabis (e.g., lemons for limonene, lavender for linalool). These are more widely available and consistent, and are what Zaza Platinum uses.
- Cannabis-derived terpenes (CDT) — extracted directly from cannabis plants. More expensive, rarer, and can deliver a more complete entourage profile.
Both are legitimate and natural. Zaza Platinum uses premium botanical terpenes to deliver authentic, consistent strain profiles across every batch.
Why Cheap Vapes Taste Synthetic
Many budget hemp vapes use artificial flavouring instead of real terpenes. The difference is immediate. Artificial cherry tastes like a sweet. Real linalool and myrcene taste like the actual strain. If your vape tastes like candy, you're not getting real terpenes.
This is one of the biggest reasons Zaza Platinum stands apart. We use authentic botanical terpenes in every product — no artificial flavouring, ever.
Terpenes in Each Zaza Platinum Flavour
Every one of our five flavours has a distinct terpene character:

- Blueberry Cookies — myrcene, caryophyllene, limonene. Relaxing indica.
